“With a fine balance of light, shadow, and geometry, Niels Koopmans transforms the ordinary street scene into bold and cinematic moments. His work invites us to slow down and see – not just what is there, but what the light dares to reveal.” Priscila Lira | founder van Street Photography Brazil
Niels Koopmans (Groningen, 1982) studied Film Studies at the University of Groningen. So he is no stranger to theorising about images. He began his career as a visual artist in 2023, focusing on street photography, which quickly brought him attention: his work has been featured in various national and international exhibitions over the past years.
He has been living and working in Amsterdam for several years. Having grown up in the sparsely populated north of the country, he looks toward the big city with a longing for tranquility. He often yearns for the peace and space of his childhood. In busy cities, he wonders: has everyone merged into massiveness and herd behaviour? Or is there still room for the loner, for the individual? Through his work, he seeks serenity and space for the individual amid all the hustle and bustle.
